Explore the Lake District from Haven Cottage Bed & Breakfast

Mark is co-owner of Haven Cottage and a highly experienced walker (and Lakeland 50 ultra finisher) who has climbed all of the 214 Wainwright Fells and walked hundreds of Lakes routes over a period of 20 years. His encyclopeodic knowledge of the Lakes is of real value to our guests, who benefit from having his expertise on site.

Mark has put together some useful information on popular routes below, but he’s always happy to advise on more specific walks to suit any ability, whether you’d like to explore from our front door or are happy to discover some fantastic routes further afield.

Loughrigg Tarn

Loughrigg Tarn

Loughrigg Tarn is easily reached as part of a circular walk straight from the front door of Haven Cottage.

This walk is a 10k circular walk, across the shoulder of Loughrigg taking in beautiful views of the Langdale Pikes and beyond.

After passing the Tarn you will continue to the stunning Loughrigg Terrace path overlooking Grasmere, before returning via Rydal Water.

A stunning circular walk via Rydal Water and Grasmere, returning on the famous Coffin route.

This walk is about a 14 k walk. A lovely walk along the River Rothey to Pelter Bridge, before taking the lakeside path via Rydal Water and Grasmere to the village of the same name.

Returning via the famous Coffin route to Rydal Mount, and taking advantage of the easy path through the Rydal Hall Estate.

Todd Crag

Todd Cragg & Lily Tarn

A simple ramble which takes no more than 1/2 hour straight from Haven Cottage, giving exceptional views of Lake Windermere.

This walk takes the steep path up Loughrigg but is worth it for the stunning opportunities for fabulous photos of Lake Windermere.

This walk can be extended by walking past Lily Tarn and joining the main Loughrigg path for either the summit or the Tarn.

Stockghyll Force

It is just an easy walk from the door of Haven Cottage takes you to the spectacular 75 foot waterfall in Ambleside.

From the centre of town take the road to Stockghyll wood, and from there it is an easy climb to the impressive waterfall, it is possible to make this a circular walk by returning on the other side of the falls.

This can also be part of a hike to the summit of Wansfell Pike.

Wansfell Pike

Taking the same route to Stockghyll Force the route continues further up the hill until a style in the wall is reached, a step climb then begins which leads directly to the summit.

It is possible to extend this walk to Troutbeck via Nanny Lane, returning to Ambleside via Robin Lane and Skelghyll woods, making this about a 10k walk.

Waterhead

Waterhead is the northern end of Lake Windermere and offers beautiful views of the fells, with varying boat trips taking you around Lake Windermere.

A walk along the river Rothay to Ambleside bridge, then taking the National Trust path along the river to Lake Windermere and taking in the roman fort.

At Waterhead you can hire boats or take a ferry to Wray Castle, Brockhole or Bowness for more exploring.

The Rydal Round

A walk along the river Rothay, look out for the Stepping Stones, then crossing the road to Rydal Mount and heading through the grounds of Rydal Hall, where there is a lovely café and the beautiful waterfall including the famous Grot.
